Shelley Lake #1

Shelley Lake #1

October 2005 Raleigh, NC

____________________________________

This shot was taken mid-week last week at Shelley Lake, a local lake and park in the North Raleigh area.  We used to visit the part on a regular basis when we lived out at the old farmhouse -- it was a great place to take dogs for a walk and to get away from things for a while.

I like this shot, both for the colors of the leaves and the colors in the water.  However, the best water-reflection image I've seen in many a moon belongs to [livejournal.com profile] ruralrob from his posting today.  (Fourth image down)  It's really a very fine piece of work by a man with a good eye for art in nature and in urban settings.

We spent the weekend fighting off illness and cleaning the house for Seren (who was supposed to come today but didn't).  We eventually ducked out of the house on Sunday afternoon long enough to run a few necessary errands and to catch "Good Night, and Good Luck" at the Rialto Theater in town.

Edward R. Murrow has been a hero of mine for most of my life, ever since I first read about what he did both with his rooftop radio broadcasts during the Battle of Britian and with his work to expose and bring down Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the 1950s.  He is, to my mind, what a journalist should be, plain and simple.

The film was good, but I was already prepared to be a fan.  The B&W cinematography was spot on, the acting was good and the whole look and feel of the 50s was captured on film quite well, I thought.  It helped that I knew the story already (and had read a brief biography of Murrow the night before we saw the film) but it's still one I'm looking forward to owing on DVD when it comes out.

From Murrow:

" We will not walk in fear of one another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason if we dig deep in our history and remember that we are not descended from fearful men, not from men who feared to write, to speak, to associate and to defend causes which were for the moment unpopular."

-- Edward R. Murrow, March 9, 1954

Why thank you for the nod. I would go all modest and say its un-deserved, but since I'm mighty happy with the image in question, I'll say nothing.

But I like your shot too. The subject matter is a classic and you've wisely chosen to include a great deal of beautifully coloured foregound water. Very nice

I'm afraid mine is classic to the point of being overdone and boring. If I didn't like the dark blue of the water at the bottom of the image I wouldn't have bothered posting it at all.

And you definitely deserved the nod. Not only is that image one of your best, it should be used as the promo photograph for your solo artist showing.

Very peaceful setting at that park and lovely refections in the photo. I didn't know you lived on a farm!

Interesting you mention E.R. Murrow today as he came up in conversation last night with my daughter, helping her go over her notes for history and popular culture exam today. I hope she remembered some of what I said.
I like this quote of his; "No one can terrorize a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices." Can be as valid today as in 1954.

Your daughter actually listens to things you say? Wow.

I'm afraid I can't relate to that at all with The Boy.

We lived in an old farmhouse (built long before anyone had heard of the word insulation) during much of the 90s. The farmland surrounding us on all sides was rented out to an uncle of the people who owned the land. He grew tobacco (horrid stuff to be around -- the chemicals they sprayed on it to control the bugs was extremely toxic), sweet potatoes, soy beans and watermelons.

We had a nice garden of our own for a few years, but ended up fighting a losing battle to bugs. It was a shame, really. We grew some of the best veggies I've ever had.

Sweet potatoes and watermelons hummmmmmmm. yum. Not so good the chemicals though. It sounds idyllic & rustic to have enough land around to grow so many vegies. {although granted real estate agents these days call "no insulation" - idyllic & rustic). Sounds like some stories in there somewhere?

The girl actually rang me between exams today to ask me things about the vietnam war to check she remembered right. Some things yeah I'm pleased she takes note of - like that or when she actually enjoys books/music I like, but other things like on the topic of boys, suitable clothing, clean rooms etc. well there's a lot to be worked on yet. I do think boys and fathers have this time a fair bit harder - all those male hormones battling for attention. Take heart. I'm sure it gets better. x0x0x

There are several stories in there (of course). One of which I'm in the final stages of polishing up to be able to submit to... well, somewhere. I'm just not sure where yet.

Unlike some of the other pieces I've been writing/reading of mine lately, I think it works precisely because I'm not trying to be funny.

The Boy and I also have the whole step issue to make matters even more complicated.

And as far as getting better is concerned, he's planning on moving back down to the UNC-Surf college 2+ hours away in January. Things will definately get better. :-)

I keep seeing you pop up in other ljs, so I've followed you here. You take truly marvelous photographs with a keen sense of composition and color and have even listed The Philadelphia Story as an interest, so I may just have to add you to my friends list on general principals...

Thanks for the compliments on my photography, but I'm afraid that I'm not as keen on my own images. I much prefer the images of many of those on my lj friend's list to my own.

The Philadelphia Story is one of my favorite all-time movies. I've lost track of how many times I've seen it. (I started with 3 times in the first weekend I saw it) It's a near-perfect script (with only one fatal flaw) and marvelous acting all around. Besides, any film with Katherine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart can't be all bad.

Feel free to add me to your list if you'd like. I liked the photographs on your lj pages as well.

I really love this pic. It's the depth of colour of the water that makes it so special, but the foliage is beautiful too. It looks as though it is one of those almost perfect, mellow autumn days.
