Eggplant Diversity

Eggplant Diversity

September 2005 Raleigh, NC

During the summer between Jr. High and High school I was frequently asked if I was looking forward to high school.

My set response was "I'm waiting for a reprieve from the governor."

In many ways The Boy seems to be waiting for a similar phone call, only he's waiting for a reprieve from all of the responsibilities of life.  Instead of 19, he'd rather be 9, and would prefer to spend the rest of his days hiding out with his videogames, his guitar and regular meals provided for him.

Last week he dipped lower than normal, so  Bonn took him to a doctor who could re-regulate his meds.  The doctor was quite professional and techincal in getting the basic information but during the course of the interview The Boy spilled his guts out, describing the depths of his most recent times, the gloom and doom of it all and how unendingly bleak he felt his outlook on life was.

At the end of a painstakingly long run of description The Boy paused.

"There is one thing that would make me feel better," he stated.

Both Bonn and the doctor leaned forward, eager to catch even the faintest glimmer of light.

"What's that?" asked the doctor.

The Boy paused, not looking up.

"Whitening strips for my teeth."

To their credit, both Bonn and the doctor burst out laughing.

The weekend up to DC for the huge protest march did not come off as planned.  It was cancelled at the last minute, much to my great disappointment.  We ended up watching some of the speeches on C-SPAN.  Bonn spent the majority of the weekend working out in her shtudio and I tried to find things to do, eventually finding some old fine silver links and making some chain bracelets out of them.

Thanks to Netflix we also had Bride and Prejudice on the slate for our hastily re-organized weekend's entertainment.  Now, for the record, I am a big fan of Jane Austin's books (yes, really) and Pride and Prejudice is my favorite of the books and the first weekend Seren brought us her copy of the A&E 1996 version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (and the wonderful David Bamber as Mr. Collins) we ended up watching all 5 or 6 hours of it twice

Bride and Prejudice, the Bollywood adaptation, was something we'd missed when it played the one local theater, and as soon as we saw it had come out on DVD we'd put it towards the top of our Netflix rotation.

We were not disappointed.

We're both new to Bollywood films, and this was probably a good, safe introduction.  It was a definite East meets West film, with a story we were very familiar with, lots of crazy, colorful musical numbers, some catchy tunes and some very fun characterizations.  It was a definite thumbs-up from both of us.  (Yes, we watched it twice this weekend, too)

And, unlike [livejournal.com profile] new_brunette, I did not ask "'ow many killings" as the opening credits rolled.  :-)

(So, any suggestions on what Bollywood musicals we should check out next?)
