I don't think I ever really tried doing the whole New Year's Resolution thing. It seemed too artificial to me and, as such, they rarely ever worked out for anyone who I knew who tried them.

A few years ago, though, I read Christine Kane's blog entry on choosing a Word for the Year. (You can read last year's entry here)

The idea is pretty simple: Take some quiet time to think about your life. What do you wish for yourself? What do you need to do for yourself but aren't? Then try to put that into a single word and let that be your word for the year.

Write your word down and put it places where you'll see it. Let it remind you that you want to follow what it suggests, what it offers to your life, to welcome the types of activites and changes that word brings.

A few years ago I chose Intention for my word, thinking that it would remind me of what my intentions in life are, and to follow those intentions and turn them into actions. However, I didn't write the word down and it only occasionally came to mind.

This year I've written down the word LAZINESS and drawn a universal red circle with a red slash through it. I have one taped to the bottom of one of my work computer speakers (in a place only I can see it). I'll have it taped to my computer screen at home and somewhere inconspicuous in my car as well.

Being lazy has gotten me nowhere. Through being lazy I have kept myself from doing the things I know I want to do with my life and simply stepped around the messes in my life instead of working to clean them up.

So that's my Word for the Year. Do you have one?
