Driving Into Raleighwood

Actually, most of today was about driving in the opposite direction.

The Boy called Bonn early this morning to say he thought his blood sugar was spiking out of control again.  She emailed me at work and I left within ten minutes of getting the message.  I drove home, picked up Bonn, set the VCR to record The Amazing Race (not Idol -- one must have one's priorities in proper order now) and drove the 2+ hours to the hospital to the side of UNC-Surf.

Turns out The Boy hasn't been eating well, hasn't been taking all of his meds properly, has been having problems with an @$$ of a roommate and has been obsessing over the loss of The-Girl-Who's-A-Friend-But-Not-A-Girlfriend as a friend (or "friend" or friend or whatever).  We chewed him out, the doctor chewed him out and while we were out getting him some lunch the friendly nurse chewed him out a bit, too.

Still, there's plenty of fault to be spread around.  It's just that none of it happens to touch him.

On the way down we agreed that this (the second time) would be the last time we drive down unless there's a dire emergency.  Landing in the hospital and having mummy and daddy show up so he can be a kid again isn't helping anyone.  Last time we drove back down the second day to drive him from the hospital to his dorm (less than a mile away) and tomorrow, if he's released tomorrow, he'll need to call campus security to come pick him up.

It may sound kind of drastic, but at two weeks away from 19, he's got to figure this stuff out for himself now.

He called me tonight to tell me about the HHGG movie coming out on the 29th.  I'd already known about it for a while, but it was clear he was trying to make ammends for some of his behavior earlier in the day.

Small gestures is about all his ego will allow these days.  As a father I understand and accept them.
