Day 29 → hopes and dreams for the next 365 days.

I suppose much of the next 365 has to do with the events of yesterday.

The doctor's appointment yesterday was, I suppose, my official You're Old; Start Acting Like It lecture by our physician's assistant. Listing Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Weight... Let's just say it was all very depressing and I would have much preferred spending my time celebrating Draw a Dinosaur Day like any sensible person would.

Instead, we met a very good friend, [livejournal.com profile] mud17, for lunch and she and Bonn did their best to make me feel better and change the subject -- both of which were very appreciated. (Thanks)

After running a full afternoon's worth of errands we finally made it home as it was getting dark. I took two new meds and went to sleep for the rest of the night -- with one break around 10pm when I went into my writing room, found a blank piece of paper and drew a quick dinosaur.

So, it looks as if the next 365 days will entail a fair amount of Good, Healthy Things, including food, exercise and a strenuous reduction in fatty foods, sloth in general and alcohol in specific.

Hardly sporting, I say.

To paraphrase [livejournal.com profile] mud17, "Changes that are imposed upon you are usually met with resistance." Or at least sulking.

Which I have done a fair amount of in the last 24 hours. (When I wasn't sleeping, that is)

Another Good Thing that [livejournal.com profile] mud17 did was to invoke the name of one of the people on my personal Wall o' Heroes, Alton Brown. She mentioned that AB recently did a show on how he lost 50 lbs -- and not by dieting, but by eating more sensibly. I've, um, watched it on my computer and I will admit it makes a lot of sense. I'll still be annoyed with the disiprin involved in having only one beer per week, but I'm willing to give it all a try.

I don't guarantee 50 lbs in the next year, but it would be nice.

One beer a week? That hardly seems sporting!

Still, we do seem to insist on getting older don't we? That will be one nice thing if the kids stick with KArate. They have a gym there that the parents can use while they wait for only $30/month. I don't need to lose a lot of weight, but my blood tests put a frownly-face on my doctor.

i took karate lessons alongside The Boy for a year or so. i managed to trade web building & handout flier design work for my lessons. the instructor and i each thought we were getting the better part of the deal, so i suppose it all worked out for the best.

some sort of aerobic exercise is definitely in my future, although i'm not sure what kind nor where. my current schedule doesn't allow for much extra time anywhere and our current budget doesn't have much expansion room, either.

the good thing is the first day of BP meds brought my numbers down to a range that made bonn smile. so, i guess it isn't a total loss.

still, one beer a week... that's cruel. just plain cruel.

I wish you well in this "new journey".

AB's food plan is austere to be sure. Modify, be sensible and find your balance. That's what it's really all about... the hokey pokey that is... the one thing I've learned the hard way is do not lose weight too fast. Past the big 40 (nevermind those other numbers) your body doesn't like fast changes. No more than 4 pounds off per month... and that's an order!
