Longleaf Pine Setup

Longleaf Pine Setup

March 2006 Chapel Hill, NC

So the Press needed a shot of a longleaf pine for a new corporate logo and an image to be a part of the cover of a big-release book coming out soon. Some of our staff were actually out where the longleaf pine grows, so they brought back the tip of a bough for me to work with.

The only problem was that the section they brought back was way too short to work with. So, what to do?

After wandering around for a while, looking for something, anything I finally thought of the thicket of bamboo growing out back. Take a section of a bamboo stalk and a large paper binder clip and, viola, instant extended bough.

The background was the next problem. The art department needed white and after asking around someone remembered that there are tablecloths hidden in a closet for "special occasions." A few more clips holding the table cloth and stuck into the weatherstripping of someone's window and I was all set.

Except for a stand for the bamboo. One box filled with paper atop another, weighted down box took care of that.

This is not the image they're going to be using, but it shows the make-shift set up a bit better.

We're off to DC for the weekend. There's a reunion of lots of us who worked at The Kite Site in Georgetown during the 80s set to coincide with the annual Smithsonian Kite Festival. I'm going to get to see people who were my best friends during those years and I'm really looking forward to it.

Bonn, who has been wanting me to write about those days for years now, is looking forward to hearing stories about me.

Pictures will surely follow.

I hope you'll be paid a supplement for this work!

I think the legalities of these images are the real question. I wasn't hired on as a staff photographer but these still might be considered a "work-for-hire" as far as the US Copyright office is concerned.

I had a very brief, more amusing than anything, discussion about this with the staff Rights and Permissions person. I think I may have to follow up with her just to see what the true status will be.

Personally, as long as I get a copy of the books I'll be happy -- unless an image goes on to become something well-known, famous and/or wanted by someone else for print in their own publication.

And it was!

Pictures and stories to follow. Sleep, I think, comes first.

No extra money, but my ego will be more than satisfied by seeing my images on book covers and getting a line on a details page.

I was Night Manager at The Kite Site for the better part of the early 80s, and then returned to close it out when the store was folding. (I get bragging rights as "the last Kite Site employee")

Kite pictures and stories will follow. Sleep comes first.
