A Visit From the Basefinder

Scott (aka [livejournal.com profile] basefinder) and I first met in a book discussion group at the local library called CRABS (Children Raving About Books) when we were probably in fourth or fifth grade.  After two or three years his father, an Air Force man, was reassigned to Satellite Beach, Florida and Scott moved.

We kept in touch via letters for years.  In fact, Scott was the person who I started honing my letter writing habits with.  (I still remember bits and pieces of some of those early letters.  Really dreadful things)  Somewhere in the late 70s or early 80s we lost touch, only to find each other again somewhere along the way.  (Um, Scott, feel free to fill in the details)

The last time we saw each other was about 15 years ago -- about the time some of the pictures in his avatars were taken.  He was pulling Temporary Duty with the Air Force in Virginia and we met in the hotel's bar and talked for several hours.  Apparently I was my typical snobbish bore, giving him grief for his musical tastes (I'll still shake my head at the disco.  I mean, c'mon...) and being my typical twenty-something opininated self.  Still, Scott was willing to put up with me.

Somewhere along the line a few years ago we hooked up again, thanks in part to the interweb.  I told him about my lj and he was interested enough to finally start his own.

We spent this past Saturday together, feasting on homemade waffles, fruit and scrambled-up eggs for breakfast and spaghetti (with eggplant parmesian for us veggies) for dinner.

All in all, 'twas a very nice day.

And, as an added bonus for our mutual lj friend [livejournal.com profile] carolune, there's an additional photo to be seen by

Late in the afternoon we took a walk around the neighborhood just to get out and talk some.  Along the way Scott noticed this mailbox banner.

"That's a banner for [livejournal.com profile] carolune!" he said, adding, "I don't think she'd like it very much."

So, of course, I had to take a picture of it and post it for you.  I mean, two guys, half a world away, talking about you due to a mailbox banner?  It just wouldn't be right not to mention it along with the photo.

I didn't think you'd like it, either.

Geez, what happened to the good looking guy sitting to my right?

Yeah, we *would* do the photos at dusk, when I'd been up since 03:30, and we'd been racewalking through the neighborhood after eating way too much good food. No wonder I look tired and bloated in addition to old and out of shape. ;-)

I think I found you in the eighties by contacting your parents. Luckily they still lived at the same address, so they pointed me to wherever you were (somewhere up north) at the time.

The most recent reunion, in 2003, (stop me if I'm incorrect) was a result of you Googling a favorite illustrator of ours, Charles Geer, and one of the few places on the web he is mentioned is... my web site.

And the "Birds Welcome" banner looked nice and cutesie... until we got close enough to make out the image of the cat!

:) I am really glad you two got together - old friendships can be the best.
